Choosing a CNC machining center for aluminium window and curtain wall profiles is not a contest to buy the highest number of axes. A useful comparison starts with the holes, slots, pockets and end features on your finished component. The objective is to produce those features consistently with an appropriate number of setups and a practical cost per finished part.
What does the axis count tell you?
A three-axis machining center provides controlled movement along three linear axes. Additional rotary movement on four- or five-axis equipment can give the tool access to more orientations, depending on the machine design. However, the model name alone does not establish which faces are accessible, the rotation range or whether simultaneous multi-axis machining is supported.
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the proposed tool path on your drawing. Clarify whether the machine positions to an angle before machining or supports the coordinated motion your job requires. A three-axis machine can be suitable for straightforward work, while additional axes may reduce repositioning for more complex components. The benefit must be checked against the actual part.
Travel is not the same as usable processing capacity
Axis travel describes machine movement; the processing envelope describes the work that can be accommodated under stated conditions. Tools, clamps, profile orientation and safety clearances can reduce practical access.
The current Smatech catalogue lists these processing envelopes, expressed as length × width × height:
- LGS3-CNC-7000: 7000 × 500 × 260 mm.
- LGS4-CNC-7000: 7000 × 500 × 300 mm.
- LGS5-CNC-7000: 6400 × 700 × 400 mm.
These figures illustrate why a similar model suffix should not be treated as an identical working length. They are catalogue values, not a guarantee that every tool can reach every feature anywhere inside that volume. Confirm the usable envelope for the selected configuration.
Build an operation-by-operation comparison
Mark each machining feature on a representative drawing and identify its reference surface. For every candidate machine, ask which features can be completed in one clamping, which need repositioning, and which require special tooling. Include drainage slots, hardware holes and connector features where relevant to your product.
Request a clamp layout that leaves the machining areas accessible while supporting the profile. If machining near a clamp requires movement, ask how the part remains located and how the revised setup is checked. Do not assume automatic clamp movement or collision avoidance is included unless specified.
Check the digital workflow before ordering
Provide a real drawing or production file for a software trial. Confirm supported import formats, programming steps, tool libraries, postprocessor requirements and operator training. A software demonstration should show the process from a customer drawing to a verified machine program, not just a finished animation.
Specify what is included in the quotation: software licence, installation, updates, remote assistance and any recurring fees. For optional barcode or production-management integration, request a separate compatibility check.
Compare a complete cycle and an acceptance sample
A meaningful cycle estimate includes loading, clamping, tool changes, machining, repositioning, unloading and inspection. Use the same part, tooling assumptions and quality requirements for every supplier. Record the proposed measurement method and acceptance criteria on the sample drawing.
Higher axis count can expand capability, but it also changes programming, training and maintenance needs. Choose the configuration that fits your work mix and staff capability, rather than buying unused complexity.
Prepare a shortlist with your drawings
Browse our CNC profile machining centers, then send your part drawings and production requirements. Include material, profile length and section, required machining faces, tolerances, batch sizes and local power supply. Final specifications and suitability should be confirmed in the quotation and sample review.
